Definitely worth a trip when you visit Melbourne but there's always temporary exhibits coming to keep it fresh. I wouldn't waste money throwing it into the fountain out the front. Send it my way

The Joseph Brown collection at the NGV: Australia is absolutely spectacular. All the best names in Australian art over the past two centuries, all in the same place, completely free of charge!

Terrific art museum! Check out the Salon Room: room full of paintings, and Japanese art and Chinese burial practices. Probably the best museum in Melbourne. Excellent looseleaf tea in The Tea Room.

Ai WeiWei &Andy Warhol exhibit was worth doing. Plenty of interaction, you get out of it what you put into it. Whole complex is well organised by the layout of the 15-18th stuff needs to be refreshed.

Awesome museum. Many free exhibits spanning different civilizations and cultures. The Escher and nendo exhibit is worth checking out!

Start at the top with the most interesting contemporary art pieces. The lower floors are classic religious / portraits / tableware.
